Root Canals

What is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy allows us to save teeth that would normally require extraction. In every tooth, there is a pulp chamber made up of living connective tissue. The nerves in your teeth travel to the pulp chamber up tiny passages in your roots. These passages are called canals, and when an infection in the pulp chamber reaches these canals, it can cause a severe, chronic toothache and other serious health problems. Root canal therapy allows us to clean the infection out of your tooth and preserve your remaining tooth structure. Benefits of a root canal include:

  • Root canals allow us to save teeth that would normally have to be extracted.
  • With root canal therapy, we can preserve your remaining tooth structure and allow you to enjoy a lasting, natural smile longer.
  • If a severe tooth infection is left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems or spread to your other teeth. With root canal therapy, we can help lower your risk, and keep your tooth infection from spreading.
  • Patients who require a root canal experience a severe, chronic toothache. Root canal therapy will relieve this toothache, and allow patients to feel comfortable and enjoy day-to-day life again.

The Root Canal Procedure

During a root canal procedure, your dentist will remove the infected tissue from your tooth, and clean out any trace of the infection. Your tooth will be sanitized and treated with a special medication to get rid of any lingering bacteria. Once the infection has been completely removed, and your tooth has been treated, Dr. Israelson will restore your tooth with a beautiful, porcelain crown. Your crown will restore your tooth structure and protect your tooth from future infection. After your crown is placed, you’ll be able to feel comfortable again and experience restored oral health.
